Redundancy and Universal Credit — what could happen?

Reviewed: September 2026

If you receive Universal Credit, redundancy-related payments can interact with your claim in different ways depending on what each payment represents. Qualifying redundancy may count as capital when received; PILON and holiday pay may count as earnings in assessment periods after you claim.

Capital thresholds (standard rules)

  • £6,000 or below — no tariff income from capital
  • £6,000.01 to £16,000 — tariff income may reduce your award
  • Above £16,000 — normally no UC while capital stays above the limit

Deep guide: Does redundancy pay affect Universal Credit?

Examples

£18,000 redundancy on UC

Net qualifying redundancy may be added to household savings. Capital between £6,000 and £16,000 can trigger tariff income under standard rules.

PILON paid after you claim

Notice pay received in an assessment period after claiming may reduce your UC award for that period through the earnings taper.
